What My 5 Year Old Got for His Birthday | GIFT IDEAS FOR 5 YEAR OLD BOYS

In this post I am sharing what gifts we gave our son turning 5 years old to help give you some gift ideas for 5 year old boys or girls.

My son turns 5 this year, but not until December. We decided to celebrate his birthday early in the summer for a few reasons. First, so he can have friends over to play outside, second so we can split up his birthday gifts and Christmas gifts, and third, I don’t want his birthday to feel overshadowed by Christmas festivities. I have been debating doing this since his last birthday and I decided to just try it and I’m so glad we did. I don’t have any regrets and plan to continue celebrating his birthday in the summer for years to come. (Unless of course he asks us not to).

On his real birthday in December, we will still make the day special and have birthday cake and celebrate him. We will probably just have a couple family friends over for a birthday dinner, cake, and maybe one small gift.

One of the main reasons I decided to celebrate his birthday in the summer is to split up him getting “so many” gifts at one point in the year. We never get our kids a ton of gifts for Christmas and birthdays, but I am mindful and like to get them things that I think they will use and love. I felt like him getting so many at one point in the year made the gifts less special and maybe even used less because there were so many, some got overshadowed.

Today I am sharing the gifts my husband and I got him for his birthday, as well as a couple things he got from friends that have already been a big hit! Hopefully you can get some ideas of gifts to give to the kids in your life or maybe for an upcoming birthday party your child got invited to. Let me know in the comments what gift ideas for 5 year old boys or girls that you have!

What we got Our Son for His 5th BIrthday

Here is what we got for our son turning 5 this year! Hopefully it gives you some gift ideas for 5 year old boys or girls!

Matchbox Action Drivers Super Car Wash Playset

Matchbox Action Drivers Super Car Wash Playset: Logan grew up playing with Matchbox Playsets and even still has a few scenes from when he was a kid. We got our son this Matchbox Construction Playset last year for Christmas so this was a fun add on. They connect together and the more you get, the bigger the playset is. My kids love playing with this and I’m excited to continue to add on to it over the years!

Hot Wheels Raceway

Hot Wheels Raceway: The one thing he kept asking for was a Hot Wheels track where the cars crash. I’m pretty sure he got the idea from the giant track at Costco. We don’t want to get that massive one that would take up our whole living room so I scoured the internet and found this set for only $16. He already loves it and, bonus, it folds up so he can carry it around to different rooms and stores pretty easily.

Jump Ropes

Jump Ropes: Our kid has been asking for his own jump rope for months. This was such a simple thing that I just kept pushing off getting him, so his summer birthday was the perfect time. I like that this came with two because, first, his sister could play with one. But mostly so we could shorten one of the jump ropes so he could use it on his own and leave the other long so two people could swing it.

Snap Circuits Beginner

Snap Circuits Beginner: My parents got a similar, more advanced set, for my younger brother when we were kids and we played with that thing all the time. You snap the pieces together to create electricity and make pieces move, light up, make noise, or whatever they’re intended to do. It’s totally safe and a great intro to electrical engineering. It is a little advanced so our 4.5 year old still needs some help.

Lego Star Wars Building Set

Lego Star Wars Building Set: Our friends got this for him and there really is nothing better in a 5 year old’s eyes than a lego set. He put it together right after his birthday party and has it set up on our counter to play with whenever he wants.

We got this Lego storage bin a few months ago and it’s been perfect to keep all of us loose Legos together and not make a huge mess when he plays with them.

Bike Lights

Bike Lights: These lights were also a gift from friends and they were an immediate hit. My husband put the lights on including this Spoke Light she got us for his wheel. Our son loved them and was so excited to ride his bike in the evening. Not only are they fun and colorful for kids, but they also make them so much more visible to cars or other people around making it much more safe for them to ride bikes at night.

Yoto Cards

I almost always give a Yoto card or two as gifts to my kids on special occasions. I like to buy them when they are on sale and have a little stock pile. Yoto cards are one of the best and easiest gift ideas for 5 year old boys or any kid that loves listening to books!

If you want to learn more about the Yoto Player, you can read my full review: YOTO PLAYER AND YOTO MINI REVIEW–EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW. And if you decide to try out the Yoto player, you can use my Yoto discount code which is HaileyOutside10 for 10% off.

These are the Yoto Cards I got for my son’s birthday this year:

George’s Marvelous Medicine: My son already loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so I thought it would be frun to get him another Yoto book by Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl is a fantastic author with wacky books. I read a lot of them as kids and it’s fun to listen along with him. George’s Marvelous Medicine is one of his shorter books so great for younger listeners. My son already loves this one and listens to it on repeat. You can check out all of his books in this The Swashboggling Collection.

Ladybird Audio Adventures Volcanoes: We are huge fans of the Ladybird Audio Adventures collection in our house. There are dozens of different cards and they are all great! They are educational but fun. This Yoto card about Volcanoes was a fun one to add to our collection and one that has already gotten played a lot.
