My son is turning 6 this year! We’ve kept up our tradition of celebrating his birthday in the summer even though his actual birthday is in December, and I still love it just as much. It’s the perfect time to have friends over to play outside, and it helps us spread out gifts between his birthday and Christmas. Plus, it makes his birthday feel special instead of getting lost in all the holiday festivities.
We’ll still make his actual December birthday special with cake, a family dinner, and maybe one small gift, but summer is when we do the big celebration.
When it comes to gifts, I try to be intentional and pick things I know he’ll actually use and love, especially since he’s at that fun age where he’s really starting to develop his own interests. This year he’s all about biking, Legos, and just having fun being a kid. Today I’m sharing what we got him for his 6th birthday. Matchbox Playset Transportation Center
Matchbox Transportation Center: My son loves the Matchbox playsets and we usually get him one for every birthday. It’s especially fun because they connect together so it makes a bigger and bigger set for him to play with. This one has a fun lift and tracks that go down. The helicopotr pad is especially fun and he’s gotten so many hours of play with this.
Hot Wheels Cars
Hot Wheels Cars: To a 6 year old boy, there’s no such thing as too many cars. I grabbed some hot wheels car to pair with his new playset and of course they were a huge hit. I know they’re not Matchbox but they’re pretty much the same and work great with the playsets.
LEGO Technic Off-Road Race Buggy
LEGO Technic Buggy: I think LEGOs will be a regular birthday gift for years to come. He has so much fun putting them together every time he gets a new set. The Technic sets are especially great for kids because they stay together even better so they can actually play with them once they’re built.
Pokemon Cards
Pokemon Cards: He has recently gotten interested in Pokemon cards so I got him a binder and sleeves to hold a new collection. For his birthday we got him some new cards and he had a ton of fun going through and sorting them by color and his favorite character (is that what you call them??) He doesn’t know how to actually play the game but has fun looking through all the cards.
Biking Jacket and Pants
Waterproof Jacket and Pants: Our son loves to bike and has been really wanting to start mountain biking. With the cooler weather coming, I wanted to get him a new lightweight jacket and a set of pants that he could continue riding in even when it’s a little colder and wetter outside. Yoto Cards
I almost always give a Yoto card or two as gifts to my kids on special occasions. I think they make the perfect gift ideas for 6 year old boys (or any age!!) BrainBots Science Fair Set: The BrainBots are such interactive, educational cards that are a hit with my 5 year old. They have a lot of different topics they cover like dinosaurs, the human body, and nature. My son is really interested in natural disasters and space right now so he’s loving this card about Earthquakes and Earth and Space.
