My son is turned 4 this year and we had such a great day celebrating him. We did everything he wanted to do which included eat mac n cheese, go to the aquarium, play with his new toys, and spend the evening with my friends who have become like family. We had planned to go rock climbing but he was just a little too tired after all of the birthday excitement so we’ll save that for another day.
I feel like this year he has really evolved from a toddler to a big boy. He started swim lessons and ski lessons, developed a deeper love of reading, pushes me on many of our hikes to be able to keep up. He learned to ride a pedal bike this year and loves to do things on his own but loves to include all of us during play time.
When I was looking for gift ideas for 4 year old boys, I knew I wanted things that he could play with on his own or together with either Logan and I or his sister. I made sure all of these toys were open ended could let his brain come up with new ideas of how to play with them. He absolutely loved everything and I know they will get so much use over the years.

What we got My Son for His 4th BIrthday
The Nugget
The Nugget: This was originally supposed to be our big Christmas gift for both of our kids, but since we decided to spend Christmas in Las Vegas with my family, we didn’t want to haul it all the way down there. So it came a little early and both our kids will still get to use it. I was hesitant to buy this as it has a hefty price tag. But after many of my friends gave it raving reviews, I decided to bite the bullet. It can be used to set up forts and obstacle courses, and I love investing in things that keep my kids active and not asking to turn a show on.
Lego Suitcase Set
Lego Suitcase Set: This is the first time we’ve purchased legos for our son. He has seen them at friends’ houses and started showing interest. I’m excited for this set since it’s compact and portable. It has different color legos with pieces to make all different builds. I love open ended toys to foster creativity and imagination. We are planning on getting him a small Lego set for Christmas so it will be nice that he’s had some time playing with Legos and figuring out how things fit together ahead of time.
Matchbox Construction Playset
Matchbox Construction Playset: Logan picked this toy out and I think he is going to love it. Logan grew up playing with Matchbox Playsets and even still has a few scenes from when he was a kid. They are old and missing a lot of pieces but K still loves playing with them. I think he is going to love a new one! You can buy these Playsets separately and connect them to make larger scenes so they will be fun for him to collect over the years. This one has a lift, wrecking ball, multiple levels, so endless fun.
Marble Run
Marble Run: My friend Briar got this for him and it might have been my favorite thing he got for his birthday. It is for ages 8+ which totally makes sense because setting up marble runs is not simple. My 4 year old can’t do it on his own, but he loves putting the marbles down it and watching them go down the different routes. I however have immensely enjoyed setting up the runs and making them different every time. It’s not a toy you can just pull out and let your toddler have at, but it’s a great family activity for us.
Grocery Karts Board Game
Grocery Karts Board Game: This gift was from my friend Taylor and he loved it! We played it right away and it was easy to learn and play. I love having different board/card game options to rotate through and play as a family or just one on one with him.
Books
He got a couple books for his birthday from family members and they were particularly fun ones. The first was The Christmas Jolly Postman. It’s an interactive book that has letters on every page for kids to open and a lot are from people they’ll recognize like the Big Bad Wolf and the Kings Men.
The second book was The Mitten which was one of my favorite winter books as a kid. It’s by the popular author Jan Brett and is about different forest animals fitting inside a single mitten that was left on the snow.
He loved both of these books and I know they will be loved for years to come. Books are always great gift ideas for 4 year old boys (or anyone of course!)
