What To Consider When Picking Out Toddler Hiking Shoes
Comfort and Fit
When picking out hiking shoes for my toddlers, comfort and fit are my top priorities. I know that their growing feet need support and cushioning, so I look for shoes that offer a snug but not tight fit, allowing a bit of room for growth and thick socks. Proper arch support, a wide toe box, and a cushioned insole are crucial to prevent discomfort during longer walks. I also make sure the shoes are easy to put on and take off, with secure fastenings like Velcro straps or bungee laces to keep them firmly in place. This lets them start putting their shoes on themselves which is really nice.
Traction and Durability
Traction is another key factors for me. Hiking trails can be uneven and slippery, so I always opt for shoes with a good grip to prevent slips and falls. Shoes with rugged, non-slip soles made from durable materials like rubber are my go-to choice.
Durability is not always the most important to me because my kids will likely outgrow the shoes before they’re able to put enough wear and tear on them that they need to be retired. However, I still look for good quality shoes from brands I trust because I do expect them to last the year that my kids will fit in them.
Materials
For warm hikes, I look for breathable materials to keep my child’s feet dry and comfortable. Lightweight options are essential to prevent their legs and feet from getting tired. I like to look for shoes made with reinforced stitching to ensure they can withstand rough terrains and frequent use. Waterproof or water-resistant materials are important for hikes that might involve wet conditions, keeping feet dry and preventing discomfort. A flexible sole made of rubber or a similar material provides good traction and flexibility, crucial for stability on uneven surfaces. Lastly, I consider eco-friendly materials whenever possible, ensuring that our outdoor adventures have a minimal environmental impact.
What Season Are You Hiking in?
My kids hiking shoes varies depending on the seasons and the weather. For warm weather hikes, my kids wear shoes with breathable materials to help keep their feet cool and dry. If we will be hiking next to a stream or to a lake, they usually wear sandals that will dry quickly.
In wet and cold conditions, waterproof or water-resistant shoes are essential to prevent their feet from getting soaked and uncomfortable. Just be aware that waterproof shoes take much longer to dry, so if their shoes do get wet inside (from stepping in a deep puddle or river) they will stay wet for a day or two.
For cold, winter hikes, I go with insulated and well-padded shoes keep their feet warm and cozy. Additionally, shoes with good traction are important for icy or slippery terrains to ensure stability and prevent falls. As they get older, I will have them wear microspikes for that added traction.
How to Save Money On Toddler Hiking Shoes
1. Use What You Have First
Making the most of the shoes you already have is a great way to save money and resources. Before purchasing new hiking shoes for your kids, check out their current footwear to see if any pairs are suitable for the trails. Often, everyday sneakers or athletic shoes are going to provide good enough support and traction for lighter, shorter hikes.
I am personally a fan of my kids wearing hiking shoes because they often provide better traction and are more suitable for things like water or cold weather. But there have been plenty of times that my kids wear what they have on and do just fine.
2. Shop Used
I have bought many pairs of lightly used hiking shoes for my kids. We are lucky enough to have the consignment store Kid to Kid in our area where you can buy and sell kid clothing and gear. Most kids are going to outgrow their shoes in less than a year and may not put a ton of wear and tear on them. (Especially shoes like hiking shoes that aren’t worn everyday).
Some of my favorite places to look for used kid gear are:
- Kid to Kid
- Once Upon a Child
- My local thrift stores
- Facebook Marketplace (online)
3. Shop Sales and Clearance Events
Shopping sales and clearance events is another great way to save money on toddler hiking shoes. Many retailers offer significant discounts during these events, allowing you to buy high-quality shoes at a fraction of the original price. By planning ahead and keeping an eye out for seasonal sales, holiday promotions, and end-of-season clearances, you can find excellent deals on top brands.
Stores often mark down last season’s models or overstock items, providing the same durability and comfort at a reduced cost. This is especially beneficial since kids tend to outgrow their shoes quickly, making frequent purchases necessary.
I love shopping REI’s anniversary sales and other sales they run throughout the year. Prime Day on Amazon can also be a good day to look around for a good deal on toddler hiking shoes.
4. Get Shoes Off-Season
Buying hiking shoes for your kids off-season is a smart strategy to save money. A the end of the season, retailers often will reduce prices on seasonal items (like hiking shoes) to make room for new inventory. This means you can find high-quality hiking shoes at a significant discount.
While this can save you a lot of money, it can be tricky if you don’t know what size shoe your toddler will need in another couple of seasons or the following year. I will do this only on pairs of shoes I know my kid can wear for multiple seasons, not like a winter boot which will have a very short window of use.
5. Use Friends/Family Hand-Me-Downs
Using hand-me-downs is a practical and eco-friendly way to get your kids a pair of hiking shoes. Since children outgrow their shoes quickly and often don’t wear hiking shoes daily, many pairs remain in excellent condition. Passing down shoes from older siblings or friends can save you money while still providing quality footwear.
My kids both have used shoes from other moms who hike with their kids, and I give my daughter her older brother’s shoes all the time. So be sure to keep shoes that are in good condition to hand down to siblings or friends!
Keeping Toddler Hiking Shoes in Good Condition
Maybe you bought a used pair of toddler hiking shoes and they need a little love, or you just want to keep their current shoes looking good to be able to hand down. Here is what I do!
Waterproof Shoes First
As soon as I get a pair of hiking shoes for my kids, I will spray them with a waterproofing solution. This will just help keep the dirt and grime off for a bit and maybe also keep a few rain drops from soaking in.
Clean the Shoes
I don’t clean my toddler’s hiking shoes often, but if they get particularly muddy or I’m putting them away for the season, I do like to give them a clean. I will also do mine at the same time so I am not doing this often throughout the year.
Here is my cleaning process:
- Remove Loose Dirt: Knock the shoes together to dislodge loose dirt, then use a soft brush or toothbrush to scrub off any remaining dirt from the soles and upper parts.
- Wash the Insoles: Remove the insoles and wash them separately with mild soap and water, then rinse and allow them to air dry completely before reinserting.
- Clean the Shoes: Prepare a mild soap and warm water solution. (I like to use the Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel) Use a soft brush or cloth to gently scrub the shoes, focusing on stained or dirty areas.
- Rinse and Wipe: Rinse the shoes with clean water to remove soap residue, then wipe down with a clean, damp cloth to ensure all soap is removed.
- Dry the Shoes: Air dry the shoes in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Stuff with newspaper or paper towels to retain shape and absorb moisture.
- Treat the Shoes: Once dry, apply a water-repellent spray if needed, and reinsert the clean, dry insoles.
MY Favorite Toddler Hiking Shoes
All of these hiking shoes are ones my toddlers have worn for multiple seasons. They have been worn on dozens of hikes, camping trips, and outdoor adventures.
KEEN Toddlers’ Newport H2 sandals: We have been using these sandals since my oldest was around 2 years old. To me they are the perfect summer hiking sandal especially for those trails with water. These sandals have quick-drying webbing, making them ideal for splashing around in streams and lakes without staying soggy. The adjustable hook-and-loop strap makes them super easy for my kids to put on and take off by themselves, which I’m a huge fan of.
They provides excellent traction on the trail and while they are a sandal, they offer toe protection help prevent stubs and scrapes, ensuring my kids’ feet are safe during our hikes. Plus, they’re machine washable, so I can easily clean them after a day on the trail.
Sometimes if I know it’s a really gritty trail that they are likely to get a lot of dirt or rocks in their shoes, I will just throw on a pair of socks to protect their feet.
Merrell Trail Chaser Jr. Toddler Hiking Shoes: One of the best overall pair of toddler hiking shoes in my opinion is the Merrell Trail Chaser Jr. I have bought multiple pairs over the years and will continue to do so.
The mix of suede and mesh makes the shoes tough enough for all the hiking we do, while still being breathable. The easy hook-and-loop closure means my kids can put them on and take them off without any hassle. They love the cushioned footbed that keeps their feet comfortable all day, and I appreciate the grippy sole that gives them good traction on different terrains. Plus, the anti-stink lining is a lifesaver for keeping odors under control.
ON CloudHero Mid Toddler Hiking Boots: I love the On CloudHero Mid for the cooler months like fall and spring. These mid-cut, waterproof shoes have a great grip, so they’re stable on the trail. The speed laces are super convenient, letting my 4 year old get his shoes on and off with just one quick pull.
The upper is made from recycled materials, which is a nice eco-friendly bonus. They also have a toe cap and mudguard for extra durability which I love since my kids are always running on the trail and jumping from rock to rock. It also has a padded ankle collar adds comfort and support, along with the cushiony sole. Plus, the water-repellent coating keeps their feet dry if it’s rainy or they splash in a few puddles.
Nefar Winter Toddler Hiking Boots: These have been my favorite winter boot for my kids, and I’ve tried many pairs. These boots feature a completely waterproof and durable thermoplastic rubber galosh, which keeps little feet dry even in the wettest conditions. The warmly padded upper shaft is water-repellent and includes an adjustable snow guard to keep snow out.
I have never had an issue with my kids feet getting wet or cold while wearing these in the winter. But just make sure your little one doesn’t submerge the whole boot in water or it might start to wet out.
They have a warm lining that ensures that their feet stay cozy on frosty days, and the boots are easy to put on. Both my 2 and 4 year old were able to put them on themselves last winter! They also have a reflective detail on the heel enhances visibility, adding an extra layer of safety.
