When it comes to dressing my kids for outdoor adventures, Reima has been my go-to brand for years. I absolutely love their high-quality gear that keeps my little ones warm, dry, and comfortable, no matter the weather. From cozy base layers to durable outerwear, Reima never disappoints.

Reima products may come with a higher price tag, but I’ve found them to be worth every penny. Their layers are designed to last, making them perfect for active kids who need gear that can keep up with their outdoor play. Plus, I love how they stand up to years of use and still look as good as new. I have passed down many things from my first kid to my second and they are still in amazing condition. Let me walk you through some of my favorite Reima pieces that have become essentials for our fall adventures.

Something to note: Reima layers run big and have around 2-3 inches of room for growth, and allow for base and mid layers, too. They have a full sizing chart page so you can make sure you’re getting the best fit for your little one. My kids are small for their ages so I almost always size down so the clothes aren’t so big on them (except in shoes, I get their true to size).

Dressing Your Kids for Fall Hikes

Dressing kids for a fall hike can be a bit of a balancing act, but it’s so important to keep them comfortable and happy on the trail. Fall weather is notoriously unpredictable—it can be chilly in the morning, warm up midday, and then cool off again as the sun sets. Not to mention, trails are often muddy from recent rain, making the right gear even more important.

Layering is key for these variable conditions; you need breathable base layers to keep moisture at bay, followed by warm, insulating layers, and finally, durable, water-repellent outerwear to protect against mud, wind, and light rain. When you have these options, you can add layers or take them off as needed. There have been many days where I get to the trailhead in October and it’s drastically colder than my front door, or I’m expecting chilly temps and we are all sweating on the hike.

Reima Base Layers

The base layer is the piece of clothing worn against the skin. When you are out hiking, you want to use a material that is not cotton as cotton holds onto moisture, keeps you chilled, and could lead to hypothermia.

Lani Thermal Base Layer: When it’s warmer, I love this 2 piece synthetic set. It’s lightweight and breathable and does a great job at wicking away moisture to keep little ones dry and warm. It does run quite big (bigger than their other base layers) so I would size down at least one size.

Kinsei Merino Wool Blend: This is a thin base layer that is a mix of wool and tencel. Tencel is made from wood pulp using recyclable solvents. It’s great for sensitive skin. This is a great option if you want some of the benefits from wool, but at a better price.

Reima Outerwear

Jumpsuits

I am a huge fan of jumpsuits for colder weather hiking. I love that they keep all the mud and dirt off of my kids and they can play without worrying about getting wet and cold. Reima jumpsuits are incredibly high quality and over the years of use, I’ve never had an issue with a broken zipper, holes, or any kind of malfunction.

All Reima jumpsuits come with a removable foot strap that is intended to go under the center of your little one’s shoe to keep out any mud, snow, or water. They are also cinched in the back so you get a cozy, comfortable fit without the suit being too baggy.

Even with my potty trained kids, I still opt for jumpsuits a lot of the time because they are so convenient. I just have them wear 2 piece layers underneath so I don’t have to take off all their layers just to go to the bathroom. If this is a concern for you, a 2 piece set might be a better option!

Mjosa Outdoor Jumpsuit: This jumpsuit is perfect for fall weather. It’s water repellant (waterproof material but the seams are not taped) and fleece lined in all of the colored areas. (Not the black reinforced parts). It doesn’t have any insulation so my kid’s don’t get too hot, but the fleece keeps them cozy. You can also layer underneath it if you want to dress them in it on colder days. The bottom half is reinforced so if they are crawling on their knees or scooting on their bums, it won’t get holes. (My code is Hailey20)

Nurmes Outdoor Jumpsuit: This jumpsuit is very similar to the above. I would say it’s a little better suited for older kids. You can see the zipper doesn’t come down quite as far and the it’s only reinforced at the knees and bum. It is fleece lined, again, not in the reinforced areas.

Jackets

Jacket and pant combos are great in variable weather because if they get hot, you can just take off your kid’s jacket but keep their durable pants on so they can continue to have fun in the mud. My kids wear both jumpsuits and jacket/pant combos and both are great in their own way!

Vantti Softshell Jacket: This softshell jacket is a great option if you don’t want a full jumpsuit. It’s a softshell so not completely waterproof, but will keep out a light rain. We brought this jacket on our Europe trip and got rained on a lot but my toddler never got wet. It’s fleece lined so keeps kids cozy in moderate temperatures. This is great to pair with the Oikotie Fleece-Lined Outdoor Pants. It’s almost like a jumpsuit but makes going to the bathroom outside even easier.

Turkki Fleece Jacket: A cozy fleece jacket is a staple in the fall. It’s warm and cozy and very soft. There is no hood but they do have a hooded version. This jacket is great for around the fire, a cold hike, or just hanging out around town.

Outdoor Pants

Oikotie Fleece-Lined Outdoor Pants: These fleece lined pants are durable and great for fall hiking. My kids have wore these pants paired with the Vantti Softshell Jacket on many hikes. My 3 year old also wore the set on our trip to Europe and stayed cozy and dry even though we were rained on often. Like the jumpsuits, these pants come with a removable stirrup strap to keep the mud and rain out of your little one’s shoes.

Vaeltaa Outdoor Pants: I got these for the first time this year and my 4 year old already loves them. They are lightweight but are reinforced with a waterproof material at the knees and bum so he can climb and scoot around as much as he wants on the trail. They are tapered at the bottom so they look really nice. I can already tell these are going to be a staple on our fall hikes.

REima Accessories

Hands

Moffen Waterproof Mittens: These mittens are great for the fall. They are made with a waterproof material but the seams are not taped. They have a wool lining and a light insulation to keep your little one’s hand nice and warm on all of your fall hikes. I love how high they come up so they aren’t just going to constantly be falling off. (My code is Hailey20)

Sormin Merino Wool Blend Gloves: We love these wool mittens for a dry fall hike, riding bikes around the neighborhood, or sitting around an evening camp fire. They are surprisingly warm for how thin they are and my kids still have great dexterity when they use them. I have the 2-6y size for my almost 3 year old and they are a little big. They also have a mitten version that is great as well. (My code is Hailey20)

Feet

Passo Waterproof Sneakers: These are great fall boots. They are completely waterproof so your little one has dry feet the whole hike. They are easy to get on and off, my two year old can do it herself. My kids wear these on the trail but also around town. (My code is Hailey20)

Hiipien Waterproof Sneakers: These shoes for older kids are waterproof and lightly insulated. They are rated for temperatures down to 14°F. They have light traction on the bottom so they work for hiking and around town. My almost 5 year old loves these and they look really nice.

Villalla Wool Blend Socks: Wool socks are a must on any hike in my opinion, and that goes for kids as well. Wool helps keep their feet dry and warm, and bonus: not stinky. These wool blend socks are great for fall hikes when they are potentially more likely to get wet feet. They will help wick that moisture away and stay warm unlike your everyday cotton sock.

Head

Kalotti Wool Blend Beanie: This beanie is cute and functional. I love that it is a wool blend with no cotton so you don’t have to worry about it getting wet and staying wet. If your kid is on the size cusp, I would recommend sizing up as it doesn’t have the most stretch to it.
