The Best Hiking Maternity Clothes for the Winter

Today I am sharing all of my favorite maternity clothes for the winter that are perfect for hiking on snowy trails.

I have now had 2 winter babies and a late fall baby so I have been pregnant in my third trimester for multiple winters. Even when I am pregnant, I still love to hike in the winter. Finding maternity clothes for the winter to hike in is not always easy, but I have found some real winners that keep me warm out in the snow that also fit my belly.

Because I only need maternity clothes for a short amount of time, I try to buy items that I can wear even when I’m not pregnant. Most of these items I have owned before or I have continued to wear after my pregnancy. I have also thrifted a few of these items which has made it even easier on the budget.

I highly recommend checking out your local thrift stores or Facebook Marketplace since many women only use their maternity clothes for a short amount of time and then don’t need it anymore.

You also don’t need a whole new wardrobe of maternity clothes for the winter. If you just have a few pieces, it will get you through the winter warm and happy. So here are my favorite hiking maternity clothes for the winter that have gotten me through 3 pregnant winters.

Base Layers

Iksplor Merino Wool Nursing Shirt: I have two of these long sleeve merino wool nursing shirts and I love them. They run big so I would recognize sizing down. I am typically a size small, and am able to wear the size small up into my third trimester without it feeling tight. The xs fits me much better when I am not pregnant. I’m wearing the size small in the cover photo of this blog post. (My discount code is HaileyOutside).

Kari Traa Rose Base Layer: Kari Traa is a women owned company that only makes clothes for women. I have a few of their pieces and love them all. I love their merino wool base layers and the Rose half-zip has been my go to for years (I’ve had my top for about 6 years and it’s still in perfect condition). Pair it with the matching high-waisted bottoms and it’s the perfect set for skiing for hiking! When I am pregnant, I just get one size up in the top and bottoms and wear them throughout my pregnancy. And I continue to wear them even when I’m not pregnant, I just tuck the shirt into the bottoms.

Reima Kinsei Youth Base Layer: Okay this is going to sound weird, but I got these kids merino wool base layers in a size 14y just to see if they fit me and they did! (I never fit in kids clothes just fyi.) I tried them on when I was 9 months pregnant and they still fit, with room to spare! They are really stretchy and defintely on the the thinner side so they were a little see thru. But if you are looking for a less expensive merino wool base layer option, this could be a good option for you. I am 5’3 and you could see my belly if I lifted my arms up, so if you have a really long torso, they might not work for you. (Discount Code: HAILEY20 for 20% off)

Fleeces/Jackets

Wildelore All Phases Fleece: This fleece is incredible for pregnant women. It’s maternity and also nursing friendly. It has two zippers on the side that you can unzip to accommodate for your growing belly as well as a zipper along the chest for easy nursing access. I got my regular size small and was able to wear it up until the day I gave birth. And now I can still wear it out and about with my baby! (Discount Code: HAILEYOUTSIDE for 10% off)

Patagonia Retro Pile Fleece: I actually got this at a thrift store years ago in a much larger size. I love the oversized fit when I’m not pregnant and love that it fits me when I am! I highly recommend just looking at thrift stores or browsing Facebook Marketplace for oversized fleeces that you will wear even when you’re not pregnant.

Free People Movement Pippa Jacket: This jacket is very warm and made with high quality materials. It is an oversized fit so my true to size fits me even into my third trimester. It is a synthetic jacket and breathable so great for hiking!

Universal Jacket Extender: This is a universal jacket extender that fits on almost any jacket. It’s the perfect piece of maternity clothes for the winter to add to your wardrobe. I’ve worn it on my down coats, rain jacket, and hardshell. If you only need a little bit of room, you can just use the 2 added zippers or you can add in the larger insert. It’s water resistant on the outside and fleece on the inside. It only takes a couple minutes to put on and a few seconds to take off.

You can also use it for babywearing after your baby arrives!

Pants

Pregnancy must haves maternity leggings

Maternity Leggings – I wear leggings a lot in the winter because I run so much warmer when I’m pregnant. I have a few pairs of maternity leggings and these are my favorite. They are comfortable, have a high waist band so you don’t get any weird lines on your belly, and are slightly compressive without feeling too tight.

Maternity Belly Band: If you have a pair of hiking or snow pants with belt loops that aren’t fitting your belly anymore, you could try a belly band to extend the life of them!

Belly Support

Belly Band

Belly Band – When I get later into my third trimester, a belly band is so nice to support your belly and give your lower back some relief. I have used this band for multiple pregnancies and it’s great when I’m going to be doing a longer hike.

Belly Tape

Pregnancy must haves belly tape

Pregnancy Kinesiology Belly Tape – I discovered the belly tape in my last pregnancy and it was a game changer. I like to put one piece of tape across my lower belly and then 2 or 3 pieces up vertically. You can leave it on for days at a time and it’s similar to a belly band but without the bulk. It doesn’t give quite the same relief as a full waist band, but I definitely noticed a difference in my lower back pain when I had this on.

When you take it off, just make sure to saturate it in baby oil first so it easily comes off and doesn’t hurt your skin.
