Looking for the best fall baby clothes for your little adventurer? Here’s how I layer my baby for crisp fall hikes. From cozy merino wool base layers to warm jumpsuits and accessories that keep tiny hands, feet, and heads toasty on the trail.

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year to hike. I love the crisp air, the red, yellow, and orange leaves, and that cozy feeling of bundling everyone up before hitting the trail.
But dressing a baby for fall weather can be tricky. You want them warm enough to enjoy the adventure but not so bundled they overheat or can’t move when they’re trying to crawl around. After years of hiking with my little ones through changing temps, I’ve found a few layering combos that work perfectly for cool, unpredictable fall days.
Here’s how I dress my baby for a fall hike and some of my favorite fall baby clothes. From my go-to merino wool base layers to the coziest jumpsuits and warm accessories for tiny hands, feet, and heads, your baby will be ready for all the adventures with you.
Fall Baby Clothes for Hiking

Base Layer
The base layer is the piece of clothing worn against the skin. When you are out winter hiking, you want to use a material that is not cotton as cotton holds onto moisture, keeps you chilled, and could lead to hypothermia. I almost solely dress my kids (and myself) in merino wool and find it to be the best winter hiking base layers for babies and toddlers because of the amazing benefits. It regulates body temperature, is odor resistant, wicks away moisture, and it’s the softest of all wool materials! A good base layer is a staple for fall baby clothes.
The Iksplor Merino Wool base layers are some of my favorites. You can use the code HAILEYOUTSIDE for 10% off.

Iksplor Baby 2 Piece Set: When the temperatures are a little more mild, I like to use the baby Iksplor 2 piece set as it is a little bit thinner. It is 100% merino wool, breathable, and comes in plenty of cute colors.

Iksplor Adventure Onesie: When it’s really cold, I love the Iksplor Adventure Onesie. It’s a zip up and a little thicker than the 2 piece set. On their website, they call it a mid layer, but I use it as a base all the time. Of course you could put the 2 piece set underneath and treat the Adventure Onesie as a mid layer for extra warmth.

Jumpsuits
Jumpsuits, buntings, playsuits (whatever you want to call them) are an absolute fall baby clothes must-have. The type of jumpsuit or playsuit I put on my baby definitely depends on the weather. If there’s a chance of rain I’ll put him in something that’s waterproof or at least water resistant. If I’m not worried about rain then I will put him in a fleece or wool bunting for some added warmth. I don’t usually do more than 2 layers in the fall since it doesn’t get too cold where we’re at. But if you are somewhere with really cold fall weather, you could totally double up on these layers.
Outdoor Playsuit

Mjosa Outdoor Jumpsuit: This jumpsuit is perfect for fall weather. It’s water repellant (waterproof material but the seams are not taped) and fleece lined in all of the colored areas. (Not the black reinforced parts). It doesn’t have any insulation so my kid’s don’t get too hot, but the fleece keeps them cozy. You can also layer underneath it if you want to dress them in it on colder days. The bottom half is reinforced so if they are crawling on their knees or scooting on their bums, it won’t get holes.

Fleece Playsuit

Tahti Fleece Jumpsuit: A fleece jumpsuit is a great staple to have in the winter. My kids wear them around the house or I will throw it on over their clothes when we go out for a non-snowy walk or outing. I love the cinched back so it’s not baggy and fits them great.

Wool Playsuit

Parvin Wool Jumpsuit: For my moms who love wool, this jumpsuit is one of my favorites. It’s a great mid layer that isn’t too thick so it doesn’t restrict movement, but has the wonderful wool properties we all love. It doesn’t come in as small of sizes so definitely more suited for your older babies.

Extremities
Making sure your little one’s hands, feet, and head are warm can be tricky, especially since they don’t always like to keep their hats and mittens on. But they do eventually learn that they are happy when they’re warm and start to keep these things on. Here are some of my favorite fall baby clothes accessories that I use for my babies.
Feet
Footwear will again depend on the age of your child and how much hiking/playing they are doing on their own. For my babies, depending on how cold it was, sometimes just thick wool socks and their fold over feet on their buntings was sufficient. But I prefer using some kind of insulated bootie when it was really cold

Wool socks: I bought these socks when my oldest was a baby over 5 years ago. I love that they are really thick and warm. My kids have walked around in just these outside and have never even come close to wearing them down or getting a hole. I highly recommend these for your babies and toddlers. (Not so much for older kids as they are very thick and might feel a little tight in their shoes.)

Villalla Wool Blend Socks: Wool socks are a must on any hike in my opinion, and that goes for kids as well. Wool helps keep their feet dry and warm, and bonus: not stinky. These wool blend socks are great for fall hikes when they are potentially more likely to get wet feet. They will help wick that moisture away and stay warm unlike your everyday cotton sock.
I put these on my baby all the time because I don’t like tiny baby socks and these come up to his knees and stay on great.

Reima booties: I got these booties for my second baby a few years ago and love them. They are waterproof and insulated keeping their toes warm. The sole is a thicker fabric but not firm so it doesn’t affect their foot development.

Hands

Tumpus Fleece Mittens: These mittens are warm and not very expensive. All of my babies have a hard time keeping mittens on, but one thing that helps is putting them on first and their bunting or jacket over top so they’re secure under their sleeve.

Reima Tassu Mittens: These are the mittens I have for my baby this winter. They have zippers up the side so they are easy to put on and come up to the elbow. They are waterproof and insulated.

Head

Reissari Merino Wool Beanie: I love this beanie for all my kids and find that the 1-4 year size fits my 10 month old great! It’s thin but warm and I love that it is 100% merino wool.
