In today’s post, I’m diving into everything you need to know about the Garmin inReach Mini- what it is, how it works, where to buy, and the pros and cons of adding one to your trail routine.

Spending time on the trail is one of my favorite ways to connect with my kids and disconnect from technology. I love taking them exploring and enjoying new places together. As a mom of three, I want my kids to grow up feeling confident and capable in the outdoors, but I also want to ensure we’re as safe as possible and lower risk where feasible.
Buying a Garmin inReach Mini has been a great decision. Having a reliable way to communicate in an emergency feels like a smart investment. It gives me confidence knowing that if I ever need help, I can reach backup.
If you’re on the fence about whether the Garmin inReach Mini is worth adding to your gear stash, here’s my honest review—covering both the pros and cons—to help you decide. I can confidently say it’s been one of my best purchases. Here’s a breakdown of what I love about it and a few things to consider before buying.
What is a Garmin InReach Mini?
The Garmin inReach Mini is a handheld satellite communication device designed for staying connected in remote areas. Garmin offers several models, each with slightly different features, but all share the same main function-reliable communication off the grid. Some models have screens for satellite maps, one has a built-in camera, and certain versions even allow you to send and receive photos. My personal favorite is the Garmin inReach Mini—it’s compact, lightweight, and has all the functions I need for my current outdoor lifestyle.
The mini version is smaller than a deck of cards. It looks like a small rugged walkie-talkie with a small loop on the back to clip on whatever you’d like. It doesn’t have any extra bells and whistles, but does have the ability to send out an SOS signal, send and receive text messages, check the weather, and navigate on the trail.

What can the Garmin Inreach mini Do?
- Two-Way Messaging – You can send and receive text messages. You can text other inReach devices or any cell phone number. There a few different ways to do this- you can select from a preset message, or draft a new one. Create a message , then select the contact, and hit send. Messages will come in just like a cell phone, and appear on your screen.
- SOS Emergency Response – In my opinion, this is the biggest benefit of the Garmin inReach Mini. On the side of the Garmin, there is a small SOS button. If you lift up the flap and push and hold the button, it triggers an SOS alert. Garmin has a 24/7 emergency response team that if they receive SOS signal, tracks your device location and notifies local authorities and emergency responders. The Garmin Team can also send updates directly to your screen, keeping you in the loop about the status of any potential rescue efforts. They could also directly connect you with rescuers to text back and forth.
- GPS Tracking & Navigation – The mini will continuously log your GPS coordinates as you adventure. You can also enable location tracking, which shares your real time location with a contact or two of your choice. There is also a feature called “TracBack” that if you got lost on the trail it would help you retrace your steps.
- Weather Information– You can check the weather and see the forecast right from your device. It can update in real time, and help you know the forecast for the coming days if you’re out the trail for a while.
How does it work?
Instead of using a traditional cellular network, the Garmin inReach Mini connects to what is called the Iridium Satellite Network.
Instead of relying on cell towers, the device sends and receives messages via satellites, allowing communication anywhere in the world. The Iridium network is also used for aviation, military, and emergency communication teams. So you can be sure that where ever your adventure takes you, you’ll be able to be connected if needed!

Inreach Mini 1 Vs. Inreach Mini 2
The 1st Garmin inReach Mini was released in 2018, which is the one I’m still using—and I’ve been really happy with it! In 2022, Garmin released a 2nd gen version that comes with a few updates, but honestly, nothing dramatically different besides the battery life. Some of the key differences include:
Feature | inReach Mini (1st Gen) | inReach Mini 2 |
Messaging | Two-way messaging | Two-Way messaging |
Screen | Monochrome, basic interface | Higher-res, more intuitive |
SOS Function | Yes | Yes |
Battery Life | Up to 90 hrs (10-min tracking) | Up to 336 hrs (extended tracking) |
USB Port | Micro USB | USB-C (modern and faster) |
Internal Memory | Limited | More memory for route storage |
Price (MSRP) | ~$349 | ~$399 |
Subcription options
I will clarify that you do need a subscription plan for the Garmin inReach Mini to work properly. They offer a variety of subscription options to suit different needs. There are three main plans: Safety, Recreation, and Expedition.
The Safety plan is the most affordable, providing basic SOS capabilities and limited messaging—perfect for emergency-only use. The Recreation plan adds more comprehensive features, such as additional messaging, tracking intervals, and weather updates—ideal for those who regularly adventure outdoors. The Expedition plan is the premium option, offering unlimited messaging and the most frequent tracking intervals—perfect for extended, remote expeditions where constant communication and location updates are key.
Garmin gives you flexibility with your subscription options. You can choose from monthly Freedom plans, which allow you to cancel anytime, or you can commit to an annual contract, which typically offers a lower monthly cost but requires a full year’s commitment.
I personally have the most basic plan, which costs $15 a month. There is also a one-time activation fee of $40. Without a subscription plan, the device’s features are very limited—essentially, you’ll only have basic map access with no communication or weather capabilities.
All in all, if you opt for the most basic plan, you’d be looking at around $220 to get started. For me, it’s been totally worth it, especially considering the peace of mind it provides while I’m adventuring with my kids. Whether it’s for a quick day hike or a longer trip, knowing I can easily reach help if needed has made my outdoor adventures safer and more enjoyable.
Pros and Cons
✅ Compact & Lightweight – I love how small it is. It really doesn’t add any extra weight, and I usually have it with me even for casual outings.
✅ Long Battery Life – Rechargeable battery that last for days on a single charge, depending on usage.
✅ Weather Updates – Helpful for planning ahead and avoiding unexpected conditions.
✅ Pairs with your Phone – Garmin has a few great apps that sync great with your phone that have maps, and easier texting abilities. Just be sure to download the app before heading out of service.
❌ Subscription Required – If you’re like me, I’m not a fan of committing to another subscriptions, but in this case, I feel like it’s been worth it.
❌ Hard to Text On – If you send a custom message it can be a little tedious, but nothing us Millennials can’t handle from our flip phone days
❌ Small Screen Size – There are other models that have large screens for easier texting and map readings, this one can be small for navigation at times.
❌ Legal Regulations – Outside of the U.S. there are some locations where using Satellite Communicators are illegal, which may defeat the purpose of your purchase. Garmin has a list you can check out on their website for further details.
Where to Buy
You can purchase Garmin’s inReach mini 2 at REI or Amazon. Amazon currently has the best deal with 100 dollars off, which is the best I’ve seen in a while. You could also consider buying used, or refurbished on Amazon or Facebook Marketplace, which is a great option too. If you’re buying second hand just be sure to check the seller’s ratings and reviews to ensure you’re getting a quality product. No matter where you buy, it’s great piece of gear I recommend. If you’ve tried it, let me know your thoughts in the comments—I’d love to hear your experience!
