Whether you’re out for a day hike or multi-day backcountry adventure, having the right gear for your dog is essential. In this post I’m sharing my favorite hiking gear for dogs.
My OG hiking partner- my dog Summit has been my constant trail companion. He has been a loyal trail buddy for years, and I love having him with me on all my adventures. Over the years I’ve gotten better at learning how to keep him safe, and comfortable on long hikes especially as he ages. Here is what I’m packing in his dog backpack for all his hiking gear needs.
Approach Pack Dog Backpack: This “doggy saddlebag” is made by ruffware, and has held up great over the years. It’s durable, and has deep pockets, and a 5 point adjustable harness system. It has plenty of room, but even when full of gear, isn’t too heavy. Summit is a golden and we got a size medium that fits him great. It’s important that any bag is the right weight and size for your breed of dog, so be sure to take note of the sizing guide if purchasing online!
Grip Trex Dog Shoes: These have been perfect for hot desert hikes, and occasionally hot pavement. They also can be used in snowy conditions, but I tend to pull them out more so to protect from heat elements or rocky terrain. They secure nicely and summit doesn’t mind them a bit. They come in a set of two because dog’s front paws and back paws are different sizes (interesting right?), so if you order via amazon, they have a great sizing guide to help you find the right fit for your pup.
Collapsible Dog Bowl: This bowl is always with us, whether Summit is carrying in his pack or I’ve got it clipped to my bag. It’s so light and deep enough that he can easily access plenty of water.
Dog Specific Medical Kit: A great kit to purchase for some peace of mind. The tweezers in it are great for ticks, bugs, or splinters. Plenty of cleaning and sanitation wipes too in case of an cut, attack or accident.
Reusable dog food bags: Perfect for packing food and treats. They seal well to keep food fresh, even in rainy or humid conditions. The smaller one can nest inside of the larger one too if needed.
Front Range Dog Leash: This leash is one of my favorite, is a great length (5 feet) with a padded handle and a metal locking clip. This clip is super user friendly and easy to do one handed.
Royal Canin Joint Dog Supplement: As Summit has gotten older he moves a little differently as expected. We started giving him these dog supplements to help with his joint and movement. He loves them and I love giving him something that supports healthy aging.
Dog Poop Bags: Eco friendly bag with easy tie handle to keep everything neat. These don’t come on rolls, which I prefer because then I can pack plenty and tuck them into his bag easily.
